After coming to know the stories of the young women featured in Sauti, I was inspired to create mixed media portraits of each woman. I got to know them by watching raw film footage and hearing stories from the Sauti filmmakers. The mixed media elements are connected to meaningful moments in each woman’s story. Within the image of Betty, I incorporated soap paper from Kyangwali. The plantain plant refers to her grandmother harvesting “matoke” in the film.
